The Algarve has a splendid climate for sailing. The wind blows regulary from the N-NW during July-August it can reach 4-5 B. During the night: very calm.
Portimao is a big fishing port at about 4 nm from Alvor and 7 miles from Lagos. Portimao's specialities are sardines. At the W of Portimao lies Sagres, Prince Henry the Sailor founded at about 1417 the “Escola Nautica”, Sines (westcoast), the birthplace of Vasco da Gama, Lisboa Portugal's capital on the river Taag. East from Portimao lies the very busy city of Vilamoura, Faro (capital of the Algarve) and Olhao (important fishing port), Tavira (city with historical background). Sailing further to Spain you'll pass Huelva from where Columbus prepared his discoveries, Coto de Donana a natural park with wild pigs, tarantula's and scorpions; Sevilla a famous city with lots to see, on the Guadalquivir.
